Whilst the world watched the Euros

Whilst the footballing worlds attention has been on the action in Ukraine and Poland, the Purple Army have been ploughing through their fixture list. Recent games have highlighted both The Citizens strengths and weaknesses, and delivered new hope to the Purple Army. Since the last post there have been 7 league games, 2 cup games and an international friendly.

Kevin celebrates another goal
As a whole it's been a  great period for the team, with an upturn in form based around the exploits of a striker who could turn into something of a club legend. The team have picked up 12 points from a possible 21, a vast improvement on their early season form that saw the team collect no points from their opening 5 games. They have also won 2 cup games against lower league opposition while  scoring 15 goals conceding 11 in the 9 competitive games.

The recent form of Belgian striker Kevin Oris has seen him look nothing short of unstoppable. He has bagged 5 goals in his last 5 games and has lead the line incredibly well, displaying strength and commitment. After an early settling in period, he now seems to have found his feet and is looking like one of the most deadly strikers in the K league.

Stemming the flow of goals conceded has also been a source of pleasure for every Daejeon fan, with the team now claiming 3 clean sheets so far this campaign.

Kim Sun Kyu seems to have cemented
the GK spot with 3 clean sheets

There have been 4 games in this period that showcased the strengths and weaknesses of the current Daejeon Citizen side, all coming away from home.

11.05.2012 - Pohang Steelers 0-0 Daejeon Citizen

Though on the face of it, the scoreline suggests this was may have been a rather mundane point collected away from home, and in some respects it was, this is what made it important. Daejeon displayed a disiplined and organised side to their game that had been lacking up until this game. Though Pohang had opportunities to score they were rare, and The Citizen also had a late chance to steal all 3 points. It wasn't pretty but the teams performance showed a new level of determination and commitment following the Suwon result, and this match showed how Daejeon may be able to fight their way clear of the bottom of the table.

14.06.12 Gangwon 0-2 Daejeon Citizen

A month later Daejeon visited fellow strugglers Gangwon. The team seemed to be set up in a very similar manner to the Pohang game and always looked capable of securing a point. The difference here was the clinical finishing of Kevin. Daejeon struggled to use the ball well and never created clear opportunities for themselves, but two awful pieces of defending allowed Kevin the chance to showcase his abilty in front of goal. His first came after an awful defensive header landed at his feet on the edge of the box which he struck sweetly on the half volley into the far bottom corner. Later Gangwon attempted to play an offside trap from a Daejeon free kick, but with only half the defence rushing out Kevin found himself alone on the penalty spot. He cleverly flicked the ball home into the top corner with ease. The Citizen had been deserving of a point but the quality brought to the side by Kevin meant they traveled home with three extremely valuable points.

23.06.12 Seongnam 0-3 Daejeon Citizen

Later the same month Daejeon travelled to Seognam, who found themselves sitting in mid table. Seongnam would have been hoping for a better start to their season and would certainly have been expecting to cliam 3 points at home to Daejeon. However, based on their recent performances Daejeon went into the game confident of being able to achieve something. And that they did. They hammered Seongnam, playing a fast counter attacking game built upon a strong and resolute defensive performance. Kim Hyung Bum continued his recent impressive form by scoring a screamer and providing a great link between the midfield and Kevin. The on loan star has been key during Daejeons recent games and has become a fans favourtie with his committed and exciting play.

Full back Kim Chang Hoon also had a great game, overlapping with real intent and delivering a great cross for Kevins clever header. Kim has turned his poor early season form around and seems to have grown into his role in the side.

After this result Daejeon were now 2 places clear of relegation, whilst rivals Incheon United found themselves bottom of the table and yet to appoint a new manager.

30.06.12 Busan 3- 1 Daejeon Citizen

Citizens fans had the right to go into this fixture with a degree of confidence. However it was not to be as Daejeon were brushed aside. Significantly Kevin was unavailable for this game due to a nasty eye injury he picked up the previous week during the draw away to Daegu. The squad lacks a suitable replacement for or alternative to Kevin and keeping him fit will be key to Daejeons hopes for the rest of the season.

League Table
These recent results have seen Daejeon climb the table and move out of the relegation spots. With games against Gangwon and Sangju coming up Daejeon will hope to carry this form forward and push a little further away from any danger.

Off the field

Off the pitch there has also been significant news, with the club appointing a new chairman. Upon his arrival he announced the club would be looking to bring in more support for Kevin and potentially another center midfielder.

The first transfer however was in the opposite direction, with the news that young Brazilian winger Leo had left the club by mutual consent having only arrived at the start of the season. The South American only ever showed brief flashes of inspiration, and though he has undoubted ability running with the ball he failed to provide the assists or support that Kevin needed.

This move freed up a spot for another foreign player in the side, which was quickly filled by the singing of another Brazilian attacker, in the shape of former Melbourne hearts player, Terra.

New arrival Terra
Seen as something of a luxury player by the Melbourne faithful, he does however have the undoubted ability to succeed in the K league. His highlights reel shows a fast, strong and direct player capable of lifting fans of their feet. The Citizen faithful will be hoping he can form a formidable attack with Kevin and Kim Hyung Bum.
